revitalising buxton

Revitalising Buxton is a £100m regeneration project transforming a fragmented, car-dominated town centre site into a connected, mixed-use neighbourhood. Led by High Peak Borough Council in partnership with Capital & Centric, the 3.5ha scheme reimagines the inward-facing Springs Shopping Centre as a permeable urban quarter, delivering 332 homes, over 9,000m² of commercial space and high-quality public realm.

A “retain, repair and reconnect” approach breaks down the existing structure into a network of streets and spaces, restoring links between Buxton Station, Spring Gardens and the wider town. A central boulevard anchors the masterplan between two key destinations: a civic arrival square and a riverside space reconnecting the town with the River Wye.

Architecture reinterprets Buxton’s Georgian and Victorian vernacular through contemporary forms and materials, with two copper-clad marker buildings referencing the town’s mining heritage, while a central observation tower provides an inclusive route and landmark.

The scheme creates a legible, accessible and vibrant new heart for Buxton.
